Interview with an Expert: The Future of Dubai to KSA Shipping
We recently spoke with our Head of Operations at Cargo Service Dubai, who has over 15 years of experience in UAE–KSA freight logistics. Here is what he had to say about where the industry is heading.
How has the Dubai–KSA shipping corridor changed in recent years?
"The volume of freight on this corridor has grown significantly, driven by Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 agenda and the massive infrastructure and commercial development happening across the Kingdom. We have seen more diverse cargo types — more e-commerce, more construction materials, more food and consumer goods — alongside the traditional commercial freight. The route has become more competitive, which ultimately benefits shippers through better prices and service."
What technology changes are having the biggest impact?
"Two things stand out. First, ZATCA's digital customs platform has dramatically reduced the time it takes to process import declarations — what used to take days can now be cleared in hours when documentation is correct. Second, GPS tracking and telematics have given both freight companies and their customers far better visibility into shipment status. The expectation of real-time updates has become standard, not a premium feature."
What about Saudi Arabia's SABER system?
"SABER has created both challenges and opportunities. The challenge is that it catches shippers who are not prepared — missing certificates mean cargo is held at the border. The opportunity is that it raises the floor for compliance, which benefits professional freight operators who know how to navigate it. We have invested significantly in training our team on SABER requirements across different product categories."
What should businesses shipping to KSA be prepared for in the next 1–2 years?
"Increasing digitisation of the entire supply chain — electronic documentation, digital signatures, and potentially e-invoicing requirements. Also, continued growth in e-commerce fulfilment, which is creating demand for last-mile delivery networks that can handle B2C deliveries across Saudi cities. Businesses that partner with freight companies with strong KSA networks will have a significant advantage."
Any final advice for shippers new to the Dubai–KSA route?
"Work with a partner who knows the route deeply — not just theoretically. The experience of having handled thousands of shipments on a specific corridor is genuinely valuable. It means fewer surprises, faster problem resolution, and ultimately better outcomes for your business."
